From 2016 to May of 2022, I was known as JohnJRenns. It was an alias chosen when I was probably 7 or 8. My brother called me Renns and it stuck, while I chose John, because I wanted to choose a very normal boring sounding name to contrast with "Renns". I later add a J when John Renns sounded too empty. Most notably, I made music for the Homestuck shitposting music community "cool and new music team" under this name, and I made many good friends as well. I released (according to RateYourMusic) 25 albums under this moniker, and 12 of them were made in one year, in the year of 2021. After the final JohnJRenns album, "Heart & Soul or: What You Love Makes Me Stronger!", I went on a journey of self discovery, and I ended up on the other end as Cecily. Those albums I made were still made as JohnJRenns, and I would never change that. I don't really consider it a dead name, because it was never really a "name" for me, more like a "project title". As JohnJRenns, I liked to imagine myself as an amorphous genderless blob, a force of nature or an entity that exists outside the realms of humanity. I wanted to be seen as a brand, not a person. As Cecily, I explicitly wanted to do the opposite, and wanted to humanize myself. If you're a fan of my music as Cecily, I think these are pretty cool to go through!

Uriel, the Fallen Angel. After she defies Heaven with her music, she is banished to Earth and trapped in mortal flesh. As a human, she takes on the new self-given moniker of Cyrilia Allison, living as a shut-in who dedicates her finite hours sorely on creating her masterpiece. ...Or, this is what she tells people when they talk to her. Can she finally find the audience she has been denied among humanity?
"Being sad has never been so fun." In Album 5 of ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021, JohnJRenns showcases 9 tracks of pitch-perfect pop goodness, telling stories of alienation, isolation and creative struggle. Starting off with a bang, "Pop Song" is a fun, bouncy electropop track sung by Kal-la-kal-la, also known as Nasqueron. But the upbeat tempo is accompanied by desperate sounding words of insecurity and existential dread, creating a truly unique JJR-esque sentiment. The track "See Me Around" features the critically acclaimed Pittsburgh rock band SOFT GIRL - the duo teams up with Renns here with a dancey indie-disco beat and an infectious hook. In "Hammerspace", JohnJ proves itself as a master of sound-art production, by tackling the trendy Hyperpop genre aesthetic with a uniquely distinct techno and pop-punk edge, resulting in a song that "could help solidify the genre", as said by SOFT GIRL singer Jeff Burgess. In "What Is Art For, If Not Self Care?", JohnJRenns teams up with long-time collaborator and all-around cool human being Ucklin in a The 1975-inspired jazzy indie pop number in which she sings a heartfelt story about artistic blocks that all creative minded folks can relate to. Finishing off with the 8-minute epic "Porter Robinson", Renns and Jeff Burgess once again join forces and creates a track straight out of Porter Robinson's "Worlds" album but yet again with a distinctly JJR edge in its dense and colourful future bass production. Jeff Burgess's rap verse which decorates the later half of the song can only be described as the ultimate culmination of 40 years of pop music history. With I Can't Afford Therapy So I Write Pop Songs Instead, JohnJRenns has assembled an all-star ensemble of underground pop juggernauts on this unapparelled display of an album, boasting cutting edge production and sharp-minded pop songwriting in a way which surpasses her predecessors and contemporaries.
With Album 6 of 12 in ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021, JohnJRenns uses cutting-edge vocal synth technology to put together a Broadway-inspired collection of show tunes, telling a heartwarming story about loneliness and friendship. Inspired by Katsuwo's slice of life manga/anime Hitoribocchi no Marumaru Seikatsu, this is an album worth checking out for any fans of slice of life anime fans or indie musical fans.
Album 7 of 12 in ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021 is a cute and charming collection of indie pop tracks, inspired by the likes of The Postal Service.
On Album 8 of 12 in ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021, JohnJRenns tells an endearing queer romance in a multi-movement pop suite. Using vocal samples from the discography of renowned Pittsburgh musician Jeff Burgess, Renns uses his voice and lyrics to tell a story of two transgender teenagers in a love story transcending societal norms. As Album of the Year reviewer Supertartory puts it, "Renns shows an immense understanding for the queer experience and an immense appreciation for it too. (...) This is an amazing piece of queer music that I would recommend to anyone looking for something to resonate with."
Album 9 of 12 in ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021 is 아동삭제 기록부 - Childhood Erasure Logs, or CEL for short. In this album, Renns reveals her darkest and most intimate memories and thoughts. Touching on themes of youth and growing old, Renns uses punk and pop styles heard in Japanese bands such as Shinsei Kamattechan and Ging Nang Boyz to explore these feelings in her native language. "Childhood Erasure Logs is yet another milestone in JJR’s music career," reviewer JackyOhayou described, "where they put everything they know to use and managed to create something truly moving and impactful."
Album 10 of 12 in ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021 is a collection of soundtracks composed by JohnJRenns for several fan mods based on the RPG game OMORI. In this short collection of 16 tracks, Renns goes from EarthBound-esque character themes, (By My Side, Post Apocalyptic Love) Undertale style banger battle themes (Winds of Change, Mermaid Fight) and epic, operatic orchestral symphonies. (Operacalypse) While all of these tracks were composed for these specific mods in mind, they have been distributed under a Creative Commons license, meaning you can use them for YOUR projects as long as you give credit!
Album 11 of 12 in ALBUM-A-MONTH 2021, Lily of the Valley. JohnJRenns wrote these songs as part of his fanfiction project based on the RPG game OMORI, originally created by OMOCAT. She enlisted the help of long-time collaborator Ucklin in this historic collaborative effort. In this, Renns is the piano player to Ucklin's emotional vocal performances. Sung from the perspective of MARI SUZUKI, these lyrics deal in heavy themes about suicide, guilt and what life means in the face of unrepentable sin. With the fanfic having reached over 500 kudos on archiveofourown.com and the album garnering thousands of streams on Spotify, Lily of the Valley will be remembered as a crowning achievement for both of these artists, and it is considered to be the career-defining highlight of ALBUM-A-MONTH for JohnJRenns.
